Want Others to Remember You?
How to Make the Most Out of Networking

OutRight Communications I recently attended a networking event and couldn’t believe what others were NOT doing. As I began to introduce myself to people and proceed to ask what they do, sometimes I waited for up to 15 minutes for them to reciprocate with the same question- if they did at all. It begs the question, why do individuals go to a networking event and not even try to take an interest in learning about others? Aren’t all of us there and in business to help each other?

So, how can you be remembered by people so it will be second nature for them to refer your services? Consider the following:
  • When first meeting someone, ask them a question and be patient for them to finish so you aren’t jumping ahead thinking of your own agenda.
  • Be sincere and show interest by asking others what they do and if they aren’t a perfect fit for your company, see if you can think of a referral for them that may benefit from their services. Ask to take a few of their business cards so you can pass them on to others.
  • Write notes on the back of their business card regarding something memorable about the time you’ve spent chatting with them so you can easily remember this person when you get back to the office.
  • When you attend a networking event, introduce yourself to individuals who are standing alone or who are in groups of three people or more. Avoid approaching groups of only two people as you may feel awkward if it turns out you are interrupting a personal conversation.
  • If alcoholic beverages are being served, don’t drink to the point of intoxication- no one wants to be approached by a tipsy drunk who wants to tell their life story.
  • Repeat other peoples’ names when you introduce yourself -it helps with your memory of who they are and what kind of company they have.
  • Answer a question with a question- He who controls the conversation will get more out of it and the answers will determine if the person is a possible fit for your company.
  • Bring more business cards than you think you need. There’s nothing worse than running out in the middle of a networking event. (well designed ones of course, and if you don’t have any- we can design some for you!)
  • Be selective in who you are giving your business card to, your cards cost you money. Really consider what you could get out of giving a business card to your competition.
  • Networking is not about the number of people you can offload your sales pitch onto and hope they buy from you. Nor is it just about handing out as many business cards as you can. It’s about having an open mind to grow your business.
  • Don’t be that one person that others try to avoid speaking with when they see you at the next networking event. Be likable. If they like you and feel like they ‘know’ you, the chance of having them buy from you and refer your services goes way up.
  • Consider developing a 30-second infomercial or an elevator pitch to introduce yourself to others. You want to spend some time thinking the pitch through so that it comes naturally to you, but doesn’t sound like a rehearsed pitch. You want it to be memorable and make an impression on the person you are speaking with.

Q
What can publicity achieve for me and my business?

A
Publicity is vital for all businesses and should never be an afterthought.

Consider what publicity can do for your company:
  • it builds credibility
  • it generates interest and gets the word out to the public
  • it makes you the expert in your industry
  • it creates a buzz and name recognition
  • it’s inexpensive for massive exposure of your product or service
  • With all these bonuses-, how can you NOT afford to make publicity a part of your marketing strategy?
At OutRight Communications, some of the forms of publicity we use consists of booking our clients on radio, TV and getting coverage in magazine and newspapers, using social media such as blogs and facebooks, develop and write ezines, and website search engine optimization. Behind the Bookshelf

book

When you walk into a bookstore what’s the first thing that catches your eye? Is it the book covers? The signs hanging from the ceiling? The carefully placed advertisements and displays filled with the latest top sellers? Whatever you notice first, bookselling is a business, and a great deal of it is learning how to implement marketing and promotional strategies. What you might think are randomly placed titles on shelves are not random at all. They are carefully selected and placed to sell by the publishers working in tandem with book publicists and marketing experts. Nothing is in a bookstore by accident. Unfortunately, most first time authors are unaware how a bookstore works. That’s where our expertise can help. We’ve worked behind the bookshelf and on the floor and can educate you on the best way to market your book.

Let OutRight Communications take the mystery out of book promotion by working with you on a marketing plan- and get your book out there the right way!

Our Recent Projects

We recently wrote a press release for our client author John Saintsbury and distributed it across Canada. The instant it went out, the phone rang began to ring off the hook! We booked interviews on radio, TV and in newspapers for him, and received 15 interested media calls. He is now traveling for more media interviews and book signings. All of that from just 1 press release! Honing our skills and determining newsworthy story pitching and design angles for our clients in order to gain media coverage is just what we do. When you’re revising your marketing plan this quarter do NOT forget to include publicity initiatives. Including that part of your plan is one of the least expensive ways to get the word out about you.
