On Your Mark. Get Set. Get Publishing!
There is nothing quite so satisfying as seeing your name in print, perpetually bound to your thoughts and on display for public consumption. But bringing a piece of writing from the “for your eyes only” stage to publication is not an endeavor for the faint of heart.
Get Publishing’s upcoming “Writing Across Borders” event offers tools to make that tough task far less daunting. Set for May 1 and 2, in downtown Edmonton and sponsored by numerous local writing chapters, the event will challenge and equip writers at all stages of their career to publish across borders of language, geography, genre, medium, and culture. With a rich and eclectic blend of presentations, workshops, panels, a marketplace, a silent auction and a banquet, Writing Across Borders is expected to attract more than 100 veteran and novice writers, editors, and publishers.
From its beginning in 2002, Get Publishing has differed from most writing conferences in that it focuses not on the craft of writing, but on the challenge of publishing. As always, this year’s keynotes reflect both sides of the publishing coin. Publisher Annari van der Merwe, founder of Random House South Africa’s Umuzi Publishing, will offer insights gleaned through decades spent nurturing new and diverse talent. Author Thomas Trofimuk, poised to launch a break-out novel that has already attracted interest across languages and mediums, will share the journey behind his cross-border success.

Get Working ON your Business, not IN it!
One of the most difficult questions we have seen for a CEO or business owner to ask is, “How much time do you spend working on the business as opposed to working in the business?” The reason it is hard for them to answer is because they don’t really differentiate between the two. They feel all the working they are doing is important therefore, it is working on the business.
So how does one determine what is working on the business? First you have to determine what your time is worth. A simple rule of thumb to use is to take the gross revenue of your company and divide it by the number of working hours in a year. You use the gross revenue because you as the CEO/owner are the one who is responsible for the entire business. The buck stops at you.

How do I meet my goals for the year?
With everything going on in the world right now, businesses are finding that business growth is not so much their top goal as finding ways to be more efficient and just survive these tough times. If your business is slowing down, take this time to make a plan for your business so it can continue to thrive. Start by setting some 90-day and one year goals and objectives that you can put into action now. With a plan, anything can happen! Here are some ideas that you can add to your plan:
-
Take time to source new customers
- Find efficient ways to cut costs and offer value-added services
- Come up with unique ways to ‘hug’ or thank your current clients for choosing you
- Put a referral program in place
- Attend networking events, seminars, and conferences to form business relationships with others
- Put a marketing plan in place for the year- and stick to it!
- Look at ways to improve your customer service
- Partner with a business who offers complimentary services from you
Without a comprehensive plan, nothing is thought out and you’re coasting month to month making impulse decisions. How can you launch a successful campaign if nothing is written down, researched, or planned? At OutRight Communications, we specialize in marketing plan development and implementation.
